Lacy stood in the open door of the chop house kitchen and closed her eyes. The sun bathed her face in warmth and she smiled. Spring was definitely on its way. She could feel it in the sun’s touch, and the soft green scent of the air. On the mountain, things were surely beginning to bloom. It would be beautiful and it was her favorite time of the year. It was also time to go home, but somehow, she couldn’t seem to work up the energy.

She should have started back this afternoon, but Mrs. Hennessey and Mattie had needed to shop, so Lacy had volunteered to mind the restaurant while they were gone. None of them bothered to mention that most of the time when they did their shopping, the restaurant simply closed.

Lacy knew Mattie was glad to have her company for one more day, and Mrs. Hennessey, well, Mrs. Hennessey was a wise, wise woman and she seemed to know Lacy’s heart.

Lacy smiled at the thought, wondering if she knew it herself. If she’d known how difficult this would really be, how painful, she wondered if she would have been so anxious to experience the things normal people experienced.

She heard the front bell ring as someone entered, and she turned inside, thankful for the distraction. The last thing she needed was Royce Darnell’s image in her mind again. She came into the dining room only to see him striding towards her.

“Afternoon, Lacy.”

She halted.

Royce closed the distance between them and held up the empty coffee cup. “I told you I’d bring this back. It took me longer than I’d hoped to get my house in order, but I’m here now.”

He held the cup towards her. She wouldn’t take it, wouldn’t come any closer, so he set it on the nearest table. Then he tugged off his hat and tossed it beside the cup.

“What do you mean ‘get your house in order’?” She asked.

“I had some thinking and sorting to do, not to mention a mine full of workers with jobs to accomplish. But I’ve taken care of all that now, and I’m here to make amends.”

“Amends?” she repeated.

“I hurt you the other night, and I never meant to do that. I was just a little shocked and concerned. You have to admit, glowing hands are pretty mind-boggling.”

“I never see them glow.” She was distracted by his closeness. “All I see is bright light.”

Royce cocked his head. “You don’t see the light running through your fingers?”

“Everything is so white I can’t see anyone or anything, just the injury. I can see it clearly, what’s broken or pierced. That’s how I know what needs to be done.”

“Then what happens, Lacy? How do you heal?”

His question surprised her. She’d never really thought about it. Now she tried to remember how the healing started. “I close my eyes and ask the power to come. It fills me up and flows through my hands into the person. I can see it doing its work. On Alex, the power flowed through his veins, healing the broken vessels.
